Founded in 1998, Beacon Specialized Living has grown from a single home in Bangor, MI, to a comprehensive network spanning multiple states. We provide essential services to individuals with mental and developmental disabilities. Ken and his family started this journey with just one home, Whistle Stop, in Bangor. Their unwavering commitment fueled Beacon’s expansion across Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula. From the beginning, Ken’s vision was clear: to offer every individual an opportunity for personal growth and the best possible care.

Now, Beacon is excited to bring its services to North Carolina. This expansion marks a significant milestone in our mission to deliver compassionate, high-quality care across the country. We believe it will positively impact the lives of many individuals. Leading this expansion is Walter Linney, Vice President of Operations for North Carolina.

Expanding Our Reach in North Carolina

As Beacon Specialized Living expands into North Carolina, Walter Linney brings extensive experience to the team. With an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a graduate degree in Conflict Studies, Walter’s career has been deeply rooted in serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). He began his journey as a Direct Support Professional (DSP), working in group homes and community settings. Over the past 12 years, Walter has focused on Care Management and Provider Networks, particularly within the IDD and Behavioral Health sectors in North Carolina. His background positions him perfectly to lead Beacon’s efforts in the state.

Walter highlights the broad range of services Beacon will offer in North Carolina. These include Residential Supports for children and adults, transition homes, and Day Programming. Beacon is also exploring additional services to meet local needs. The goal is clear: to address the diverse needs of North Carolina communities.

Furthermore, Walter emphasizes the importance of forming strong partnerships with payors. This will help identify growth opportunities and align with acquisition partners who share Beacon’s values. By doing so, Beacon aims to build a trusted reputation across the state. Ultimately, Beacon seeks to become the provider of choice in North Carolina. This strategy, combined with our dedication to high-quality care, will cement our position as a leader in the field.

Impact on North Carolina Communities

Beacon’s expansion into North Carolina is more than just a business move. It’s an opportunity to positively impact local communities. Walter explains that Beacon is committed to addressing the most significant service disparities in the areas where we operate. By actively engaging with state health leaders, Beacon identifies each community’s specific needs. This allows us to tailor our services to meet those needs effectively.

Walter’s excitement about this expansion is clear. He has dedicated over 20 years of his career to improving residential care for individuals with IDD. This expansion represents a continuation of that commitment. Beacon is uniquely positioned to provide the high level of care these individuals deserve. We are committed to significantly enhancing the quality of life for those we serve.

Why North Carolina?

The decision to expand into North Carolina was driven by the state’s significant need for quality residential care. Walter sees this as a tremendous opportunity for Beacon. We can improve the care experience for the people we serve. Additionally, this expansion allows Beacon to establish itself as the provider of choice across the state. The choice of Raleigh as a base of operations was deliberate. The area offers a high quality of life. As Walter notes, the winters here are far more manageable than those in the Midwest. It’s a vibrant area where we’re happy to stay.
